Samsung Electronics announced the launch of SmartThings Find on 30th October 2020 and boasts that the service can help you find your Galaxy devices easily. Here are the details surrounding the SmartThings Find service.
In a press release, Samsung said that about 6 million people in Korea, the UK and the US had tested the service first before it released it for the public. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies to locate lost Galaxy devices.
Jaeyeon Jung, Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, mentions that the service also uses AR, maps and sounds as well. “SmartThings Find is a simple and visual solution that will help you easily locate your favorite devices. This is just one example of the new meaningful mobile experiences that UWB technology will bring to people across the world,” said.

Users can locate their smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and even ‘individual earbud’. The service only requires users to complete a quick registration process. Additionally, it still works even when the missing device is offline.
“Once a device has been offline for 30 minutes, it produces a BLE signal that can be received by other devices. If you report your device as lost via SmartThings Find, any nearby Galaxy smartphone or tablet that has opted into helping find misplaced devices can alert the Samsung server about its location, which will in turn notify you,” Samsung wrote.
The service shows you the exact location of your lost device on a map and when you approach it, you can either make the device ring or use the AR-based Search Nearby function to find it. All Galaxy smartphones and tablets running on Android 8 or later will be able to use the service. In addition, other items will also get it by 2021.
