Did You Know You Could Overdose On These Five Food Types?

It can get pretty hard to say no to a certain food, especially when they are your favourite. Imagine having your favourite meal cooked by the best chef placed right before you. They set it in a candle-lit room with your favourite music playing in the background. This meal may be for one or more, it depends on your guilty pleasure. It’s okay to indulge in that meal at that point. However, when you are offered that meal every minute, you can be caught up in the pleasure of feasting until you drop. Truth is, you can literally drop when you overdose on certain types of food.

 

Sure you can choke when you gulp it down like it’s a race, but there’s a downside to eating too much of everything — even good food. From a scale of food items that are good in moderation, we have selected some that may seem innocent but are actually bad for your health when consumed in larger portions.

1. Nutmeg

 

This is one delicious spice to spark up the flavour of your meal or beverage. However, it is relatively easy to overdose on this food type. Because of its delicious taste, you can end up overdosing on it as well. The effects are related to that of a hallucinogenic drug. You tend to feel the impact of it about three to eight hours after consumption in a large quantity. The effects include anxiety, psychotic episodes, visual hallucinations or fear.

 

2. Coffee

Coffee is great if you want to start your day without feeling like a robot. More people are addicted to coffee than they would like to admit. They have programmed themselves to believe they can’t function without their daily dose of java. It has its perks, but too much of it is detrimental to your health. According to the Mayo Clinic, you shouldn’t consume over 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine in a day. When you consume more than this, you may suffer from insomnia, restlessness, nausea, irregular heartbeat, muscle tremors, anxiety and headaches.

 

3. Carrots

These seem innocently delicious. If you’re a fan of these veggies, then you can easily get carried away when eating it. They are healthy for your body as they are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre. They are also a great antioxidant and are good for your overall health. Unfortunately, if you don’t want to have an orange, yellow or golden pigmentation, then you need to control your intake. Carrot contains beta-carotene which is responsible for its orange colour. When your bloodstream is exposed to too much beta-carotene, it can cause skin discolouration. It is clear in certain parts of your body like the palms, soles, knees and nasal area. The condition is called carotenemia, and it is harmless.

Sushi tuna is raw tuna. Their muscles contain mercury which skyrockets after they have consumed other small fishes. Indirectly, you consume the fish with higher mercury which can cause severe neurological problems. The size and species of fish you take determine the mercury level your body intakes. An example of fish with mercury is Bluefin tuna. The higher number of tuna you eat, you higher the mercury in your body. We advise pregnant women and young children not to indulge in tuna sushi for precautionary measures.

 

5. Water

 

This is one drink that many can easily overdose on. You may be advised to stay hydrated often but, when you take in too much water, you could suffer water intoxication. This occurs when there is too much water in your bloodstream. It dilutes the concentration of sodium in the blood, creating an electrolyte imbalance. Therefore, stick to drinking water correctly instead of sticking to the myth of eight glasses a day.
