We take a look at five times music fans got thrilled by tech-assisted performances at the Grammy Awards. Despite the award show majorly being about the winners, performances are special highlights of the ceremony. Many stay glued to their screens while those at the venue watch the stage because of the thrilling performances.
With the 62nd edition of the prestigious Grammy Award upon us, it is worth the time to remember five times tech boosted stage performances.
1. Lady Gaga, 2016.
This is perhaps the most popular use of experimental technology on a live music set. At the 58th Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga and Intel themed up to give fans a special treat. With a special ring in her hands, Gaga controlled the stage’s appearance with hand movements. Also, the engineers managed to project paintings on her face to honour her biggest musical influence, David Bowie.
2. Kendrick Lamar, 2016.
Unlike the above example, Kendrick’s Grammy performance use of technology is not its main strength. His electrifying rap style already had the fans swaying and chanting. However, it is noteworthy that when the lights went off and the reflective clothing of the crew lit up, the performance took a huge turn amidst the shocked cheers.

3. Madonna, 2015.
Madonna’s memorable Grammy performance in 2013 with horned muscular dancers ended with her getting lifted into the hair by her waist contraptions. Despite not being a new tech, it sure added some feathers as she had just performed a song with the line “Love’s gonna lift me up”.
4. Carrie Underwood, 2013.
It is hard for a singer like Underwood to be outdone by something other than her voice. But while she sang at the Grammys Award in 2013, people had their eyes on her dress because it projected colourful images of butterflies and flowers. Thus, adding sombre ingredients to her soulful performance.
5. Nicki Minaj, 2012.
At the 54th Grammy, Nicki Minaj performed The Exorcism of Roman. In the process, she performed a faux exorcism session as she was suspended midair by engineering contraptions. Like the ones that Madonna later used in 2013.
Now, the 62nd Grammy is here already, as it comes up on Monday 27th January 2020.
