The Romanian DTH operator Focus Sat has launched an online TV service named Play TV. Available through the Focus Sat app on smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and TVs, it runs on Android and iOS and consists of two subscription tiers. Both of the tiers – Play TV and Play TV Extra – include access to a video library with over 500 titles, among them National Geographic premium documentaries and some in 4K.
Commenting on the development, Mihai Tilina, DG, Eviso Marketing Advisory, said: “The day-to-day organisation, flexible planning of work and leisure and the importance of spare time have become vital in the current environment. On the video content market, TV has long been determined by linear programming; but advanced technology has led to a better, more interactive television experience. Now TV programmes can be viewed anywhere, anytime!”

Focus Sat was launched in 2004 as the first provider of digital satellite in Romania. It was part of Liberty Global’s UPC DTH before being acquired by M7 Group, itself now owned by Canal+. It appears that the race in subcscription TV is getting hotter. TV streaming services providers have been doing their best to bring more customers under their brand. It is encouraging that even old-timers are following the trending online service formats.
Things are not actually going very smooth for Focus TV in recent times. In 2014, due to service being unavailable and lack of customer service, the company was fined and banned from broadcasting in Moldova for six months. Focus Sat has not returned to Moldova since.
