General Motors is looking towards Microsoft to build the voice assistant technology for its future vehicles using ChatGPT. An executive of the company was quoted by Reuters as saying that the car maker was looking into how to use the generative tech.

GM is specifically leveraging Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Service, which includes all OpenAI products, including the trending chatbot. The company’s VP Scott Miller even went one step further to say that the coming assistant would offer more than what is typically expected.

Miller hinted that personal assistance powered by ChatGPT could help car owners learn more about their vehicle’s features as well as understand what some diagnostic lights on the dashboard are trying to tell them about.

He added that the AI can even provide instruction on how to perform simple maintenance like changing a flat tire by showing tutorial video on the infotainment system.

In addition, since GM would be using the technology from the Azure end, which allows for customising the tool from scratch, it will be easier for the car maker to ensure that the AI is more focused on vehicle performance and a lot less than the ChatGPT that we are accustomed to.

“This shift is not just about one single capability like the evolution of voice commands, but instead means that customers can expect their future vehicles to be far more capable and fresh overall when it comes to emerging technologies,” a company spokesperson said.
