Google has decided to postpone the unveiling of the soon to be launched Android 11. The unveiling scheduled for 3rd June 2020 is being postponed as a result of protests arising from the murder of an unarmed African American man, George Floyd by US policemen.

Android Developers in a tweet posted the news. “We are excited to tell you more about Android 11, but now is not the time to celebrate. We are postponing the June 3rd event and beta release. We’ll be back with more on Android 11, soon,” it said.

The myriad of protests currently going on in the US realistically leaves no one in the mood for a software release. Floyd was murdered after policemen trying to arrest him on suspicion of forge cheques refused to hear his pleas for air whilst they held him in a knee chokehold.

He repeatedly told the police officers, “I can’t breathe”. Instead, they ignored his pleas while he was held in the position for more than 10 minutes.

This follows a series of incidents that have affected African Americans. 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, was in March 2020 also fatally shot by police in her Louisville, Kentucky, home.

It is unclear when Google will launch Android 11, but it is clear that by the current mood in America, a lot of people don’t care about an OS.
