GitHub launched a code writing assistant called Copilot on June 21 that only costs $10 a month and leverages the power of OpenAI.
It fancies itself as “Your AI pair programmer” and uses OpenAI Codex, a system that can translate natural language into code. The software can write ‘more than a dozen programming languages’ and was recently improved to be able to interpret simple commands in natural language and execute them.
GitHub Copilot has a free trial for you to give it a spin and test its usefulness but the several positive reviews online are quite compelling. There is also a FAQ section at the bottom of the site that answers lots of your questions.

For ease of use, the software can integrate with some of the most popular code editor with its integrated development environment (IDE). It supports Visual Studio, Neovim, VS Code, and JetBrains IDEs.
The main aim of Copilot is to reduce the time that developers spend in creating boilerplate and repetitive code patterns. All users need to do is write a comment describing the logic that they want and the software will immediately suggest code to implement it.
“Trained on billions of lines of code, GitHub Copilot turns natural language prompts into coding suggestions across dozens of languages,” the makers say.
In addition, for verified students and people who maintain popular open-source projects, the software will remain free. Others can take advantage of the $100/year plan to save $20 on subscription costs.
Later in 2022, GitHub says that it will launch Copilot for companies. Likely, this will cost extra and bring more features.
