Microsoft-owned software hosting site, GitHub is reducing the prices for its subscription in a bid to make the platform more accessible to private developers. GitHub will also move a key feature of all its paid plans into its existing free tier.

GitHub says “Groups”, its subscription, which was previously $9 per person a month, will now be $4 a month. It will also transfer existing subscribers to the new pricing immediately.

“We’re glad to announce that we’re making non-public repositories with limitless collaborators out there to all GitHub accounts. All the core GitHub options are actually free for everybody.

“Till now, in case your group needed to make use of GitHub for personal growth, you needed to subscribe to one in all our paid plans. However, each developer on earth ought to have entry to GitHub. Worth shouldn’t be a barrier,” the company said in its announcement.

Unlimited number of collaborators for private repositories

This move means GitHub is making private repositories free to use for an unlimited number of collaborators. A repository is where a team stores its project’s files and revision history.

Previously, users could only use the free plan for public repositories and open source projects. Then in January 2020, GitHub allowed subscribers access to its free plan access to unlimited private repositories. The caveat, however, was that it had a limit of three collaborators. It is now lifting that restriction with this new change.

Therefore, any business or team that previously subscribed to a paid GitHub plan just for the unlimited private repositories and collaborators, can now downgrade to the free subscription plan.
