Google revealed two new Pixel smartphones on Tuesday, 7th May 2019. At Google I/O 2019, the company announced the Pixel 3A and 3A XL, along with new updates coming to Android Q and the Google Assistant. The Pixel 3A and Pixel 3A XL boast of a major selling point – they have a better camera than Apple’s iPhone.

The low-priced phones have starting prices of $400 and $480 respectively. This makes them far less expensive than Google’s flagship smartphone Pixel 3. Despite the price, the phones boast of an even better camera.

The Verge’s Dieter Bohn writes in his review of the smartphones,

“If you want to buy a new smartphone that costs between $300 and $500, you should buy a Pixel 3A or Pixel 3A XL. It is the best phone in that price range, and it’s actually competitive with more expensive phones in one very important way: the Pixel 3A has a great camera.”

During the official reveal of the new phones, Google took a shot at Apple’s iPhone X camera by making direct comparisons.

The Pixel phones reportedly have the best-in-class camera technology and can take excellent pictures in low light. Google did not resist the urge to capitalise on this great technology to take a jab at Apple’s far more expensive iPhone X.

Google Vice President of product management, Sabrina Ellis said on stage at the reveal,

“What other smartphone cameras try to do with expensive hardware, we can deliver with software and AI including high-end computational photography. So here’s what that means: Pixel 3a can take amazing photos in low light with Night Sight. It’s one of Pixel’s most popular features.”

As she said this, an image appeared projecting how much better Google’s Pixel phones are at capturing high resolution low light images. This, of course, was in comparison with the iPhone X.

In comparison, Google referred to the other phone as “Phone X.”
