Google Docs rolls out optional email notifications feature for document changes and makes them a per file basis. The new feature allows you get notification about changes directly in your inbox.

You no longer have to wait until you open the document before seeing what changes have been made. It will also include necessary details such as ‘what changes were made, when the changes were made, and who made them.’

You can set how you want the notifications to work either from your Gmail or in Docs (through the Notifications settings dropdown bell icon or by going to Tools > Notification settings).

As the company explains, you may need to know when some specific areas of a document has been changed as soon as they are made. This is what the new feature will bring.

“Staying on top of relevant changes and comments across multiple documents can be difficult. By giving you the option to specify which comments and changes to be notified about, you can more easily stay on top of what needs your attention most and keep track of collaboration,” Google says on the Workspace blog.

To customise settings from Gmail, go to the Notification settings dropdown and choose what kind of notifications you will get:

The company says that you may not see the feature until August 2, as it will take up to 15 days to complete roll out. It began rolling out on July 19, 2022. Collaborations on writing projects just got way easier.
