Google has announced the launch of a new speech and translation tool for android. It made the announcement on 4th March 2020. Google says this tool is different from other screen reading software. This is because it has a “natural-sounding” voice and cadence to make listening more relatable and inspiring.

Google believes this will be a game-changer as most listeners prefer to listen to a natural-sounding voice over a long period of time.

The new tool is also able to translate articles in real-time, allowing users to hear the articles spoken out loud in a different language than they were originally written.

To activate the tool, while browsing an article on an Android phone simply say “Hey Google, read it,” or “OK Google, read this page.” Then, the Google Assistant will begin reading the article aloud. The tool will also highlight words as they are spoken in real-time and will auto-scroll the page as it’s required.

Users can also pick from multiple voices and customise the speaking pace for their listening pleasure.

The new speech and translation tool is available in 42 languages including Spanish and Hindi. Google first showed this tool at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2020.

Google announced the addition of 5 new languages to its translation service in February 2020. Kinyarwanda, Odia, Tatar, Turkmen, and Uyghur became a part of the service for the first time. They are part of Google’s commitment to improving its speech services.

In 2019, Google introduced an interpreter mode for Google Assistant. The mode allows its users to have a conversation, back and forth in different languages. The tool was first available for smart displays, however, it became available for mobile phone users in December 2020.
