Google is merging Meet and Duo into a powerful voice and video call app

Google is combining all Duo features with Meet to create a powerful voice and video calling app. The outcome is that there will soon be no more Google Duo later in the year.

However, for now, Duo users can continues enjoying features like group calls for up to 32 people, doodles, masks, effects, and so on. Also, in June 2022, the Duo app will be able to do a lot of things that were exclusive to Meet users like video meeting scheduling.

Additionally, Duo users could enjoy the following:

  • Customize virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings
  • Schedule meetings so everyone can join at a time that’s convenient for them
  • Use in-meeting chat for deeper engagement
  • Live share content to enable interaction with all participants on the call
  • Get real-time closed captions to better support accessibility and boost participation
  • Increase size of video calls from a current limit of 32 to 100 participants
  • Integrate with other tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages and more

“Later this year, we’ll rename the Duo app to Google Meet, our single video communications service across Google that is available to everyone at no-cost,” Javier Soltero, Vice President and General Manager of Google Workspace, wrote in a blog post.

The transition from Duo to Meet will be as smooth as possible, according to Google. So, users should be assured of no hiccups. Also, most of the features will still remain free.
