Google Photos May Have Accidentally Sent Your Videos And Photos To Someone Else

In what has turned out to be an embarrassing turn of events, Google Photos may have sent your files to someone else. According to a post on Android Authority, strangers may have been able to download some of your videos from their Google Photo apps.

This discovery is far scarier considering the sheer number of people using Android phones with the Google Photo app preinstalled. As the referenced news release mentions, this error might be the fault of a bug.

It affected the data export services of Google and thus led to a malfunction.

A Twitter user named Jon Oberheide had shared a photo of the message Google had sent.  In the mail, Google informed him of an issue affecting the Google Takeout data export service. It had allegedly occurred between November 21 and 25.

It further informed Jon that he may have also gotten someone else’s files at the last time he downloaded his data. However, Google announced that the issue has now been resolved.

The company told 9to5Google in a report that photos were not affected. Yet, it is a serious matter considering the amount of details videos contain. It also tried to pacify users by saying only a small percentage of users were affected, a figure it pegged at 0.01%.

But when one realises that Google how many customers, the implications are clear. Informing affected users is a good move as well.

At the just concluded Super Bowl 2020, the multinational American internet service company had stolen commercial highlights. It had aired its touching Loretta ad for its Assistant software.

Also, its parent company had recently published an unexpected dip in its earnings. This is quite surprising as the tech giant keeps expanding by buying many businesses and startups.

Security lapses are major issues as more internet users are waking up to their privacy rights. It has in-turn spurred internet service providers to sit up and start providing stricter security while giving users control over their data.
