Google Releases Bard, A ChatGPT Rival AI

Summary: Google has launched a new large language model chatbot called Bard, aimed at competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Bard will provide conversational answers to questions, combining information from the web to offer fresh, high-quality responses. The company plans to release its API and make it publicly available in the coming weeks.

Google is launching a large language model chatbot called Bard to compete with ChatGPT, which has gone viral in the last couple of months.

This development has been expected since the OpenAI software became a threat to Google Search users. Even the company’s co-founder said that they expect the Alphabet-owned firm to release a rival and does not think its product would overthrow Google anytime soon.

Still it makes for exciting news that Google Search dominance is challenged as it means that the company now has no choice but to add new features and improve existing ones. On the other hand, it provides an alternative for when ChatGPT is overloaded with requests or when you need to pay to access some features. Hopefully, Google Bard remains free for a long time.

Large language models are not new at Google, in fact, its Lamda model was so good that a former engineer caused panic in 2022 when he said that the AI was eerily sentient.

In a Tweet, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Bard would attempt to combine information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. From February 6, the AI was released to a group of trusted external testers. Recall that some days prior, we reported that Google was testing this model internally.

What is Google Bard, the ChatGPT rival?

Bard works like ChatGPT, it has been trained with loads of the information available online in the past years. However, as a chatbot, instead of just spilling out results when you ask it a question, it provides conversational answers and even when there is no single correct answer, it replies with one that shows the different opinions.

As of when this article was published, Google’s Bard is not yet publicly available, although Pichai did say it will be in the coming weeks. Also, the company plans to release its API to allow developers create apps using its technology.

“Developers can soon try our Generative Language API, initially powered by LaMDA with a range of models to follow. Over time, our goal is to create a set of tools and APIs that will make it easy for others to build more innovative applications with AI,” he wrote.

Google said that it plans to bundle some of Bard features with Search as many of us expects it to do. With this move, it is Microsoft’s turn to take its OpenAI partnership to the next level with ChatGPT.
