Google has officially removed the Hangouts brand from its G Suite enterprise offering by rebranding the Hangouts Chat as Google Chat. This follows the rebranding of its video conferencing app Hangouts Meet to Google Meet.

Google hinted at the change in an updated G Suite support document. The company then later confirmed the move to The Verge.

It should be noted that Google also refers to its new RCS messaging protocol as ‘Chat’. And, Google’s old Google Talk messaging platform was usually referred to as Google Chat or ‘Gchat’ before it was shutdown.

Google adds that there will be no changes to the classic version of Hangouts, according to The Verge. Its regular Hangouts messaging will still continue and its users will, for the time being, will be able to access the service.

The Google Chat rebranding also comes with a small feature update. Its users will now have the ability to forward their chat messages to their Gmail inbox.

This feature means that Chat users will forward the selected message plus the last four in the conversation when they forward a message to their inbox. If the user later turns the chat history off, the messages will remain in their inbox.

Google Chat is a more robust workplace productivity and messaging app like Slack than the one-to-one Gchat messaging app that was discontinued in the past.

The original Hangouts Chat will also be accessible on Andriod and iOS in the meantime.
