Google is conducting a beta test for its own version of Apple’s airdrop that it calls Nearby Share. The feature will help android users to quickly and wirelessly transfer files between nearby Android phones.
“We’re currently conducting a beta test of a new Nearby Share feature that we plan to share more information on in the future. Our goal is to launch the feature with support for Android 6+ devices as well as other platforms,” Google said in a statement to Android Police.
Android Police, reports that the feature works well for photos and videos as well as links and tweets.

However, the report says you cannot use Nearby Share to send random things to strangers like Apple’s airdrop. Additionally, there will be three visibility settings: All Contacts, Some Contacts, and Hidden. Users have to have to set the function to visible on their phones via a Quick Settings tile. Then, before they can receive content, and they must manually accept the file.
It seems that it is still possible to send content to people outside those on your contacts. However, they’ll need to be willing and waiting for it with their own Nearby Share feature open. Then they must accept the file for it to transfer to them
In the settings pane, you can configure your device name and visibility. You can also choose which medium to use in making the transfer. You could use your internet connection for small files, Wi-Fi, or to always share offline.
The Nearby Share feature showed up in Chrome OS Canary builds in June 2020. This indicates that it might as well work on Chromebooks.
