Hackers Breach Acer Servers, Releasing Millions Of Customer Private Data

Acer has announced that a group of hackers known as the Desorden has breached their server in India. These hackers made away with over 60 gigabytes worth of customers private data.

The hack was first reported by the hackers, after which they announced that “affected customer data are in the millions.” Acer confirmed the breach saying names, addresses, and phone numbers of millions of customers were hacked.

Worryingly, the hackers also stole some restricted corporate financial information.  Acer immediately performed a full scan of its system after confirmation. It also said it has informed customers who are potentially affected by the breach.

Elsewhere AMD has released an update to all its chip processor powered laptops and computers.  This update is mostly for its Ryzen processors. Cybersecurity researchers found a vulnerability that allows hackers to leak sensitive information like passwords from the drivers.

Kyriakos Economou, Co-founder of Cybersecurity firm ZeroPeril Ltd has been credited with identifying the vulnerability. AMD afterwards released a patch, citing an Information disclosure. The chip company classifies the hack severity as a medium.

Hackers were attacking the Platform Security Processor (PSP) found in AMD’s chipset. This chipset stores sensitive information in the memory of the various operating system they ship with.

AMD’s patch known as CVE-2021-26333 prompts users to update its AMD PSP driver 5.17.0.0 through a Windows update. Users can also update their AMD Chipset Driver to version 3.08.17.735.

Simply, press Windows key + S, search for update and select Check for Update. Then look for windows latest update. You will also have to restart your PC to make sure this update is working up to speed.

This is the second time Acer is having a breach in 2021. Earlier this year known hacking group REvil stole sensitive data including bank statements and other financial information.

The group demanded Acer pay them $50 million in cryptocurrency as ransomware. Its latest breach by Desorden hasn’t requested any ransomware yet. But they have published over 10,000 accounts of personal customer data.
