Nigerian feature films can now be submitted to the 93rd Oscars for screening and possible selection under the international film category. Amazing, yes?

The news was made known by the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee ( NOSC). Chineze Anyaene,  chairperson of the committee said in a statement on Thursday that the Academy Awards recently opened entries to honour the best new films released globally. The event is set to hold on April 25, 2021.

The NOSC is the body recognised by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts. They have been mandated to make submissions on behalf of the Nigerian film industry.

According to Anyaene, since Lion Heart by Genevieve Nnaji debuted at the Oscar screenings in 2019, the committee has seen a monumental rise in film submissions. She noted that there’s been a boost in the quality of production and storytelling.

Also, industry stakeholders and investors have begun to invest more in filmmaking due to recent international recognition.

Speaking on the rules, Ayaene said “due to guidelines and government-mandated rules to manage Coronavirus spread, filmmakers had to provide to the Academy documentation, original documents and an English translation of government-mandated theatre/cinema closure dates.”

.

Films entries can be submitted to the NOSC by visiting https://thenosc.org/submit-your-film before 2nd October, 2020. Information on special rules for the award can be found on the nosc.org.special-rules-for-iff-awards. The info@thenosc.org should be contacted for submission details and further enquires.
