How Hackers Stole $2.3 Million From Trump’s Re-Election Funds

A group of hackers stole $2.3 million from the Republican Party in Wisconsin, the stolen money was from Donald Trump’s re-election funds. The hackers stole the money by creating fake invoices that looked like real vendors.

This hit comes just a week before the Election Day in November 2020. The hackers used a combination of phishing and identity theft to perpetuate the attack. According to a statement by Wisconsin GOP chairman Andrew Hitt;

“Cybercriminals, using a sophisticated phishing attack, stole funds intended for the re-election of President Trump, altered invoices and committed wire fraud. These criminals exhibited a level of familiarity with state party operations at the end of the campaign to commit this crime.”

However, Hitt says the hack was just a minor glitch. They expect to still be able to function fully in support of President Trump’s re-election.

The hackers were able to portray themselves as some of the Wisconsin Republican Party vendors. Likely, this required knowing enough about the real companies as well as intercepting emails. Some of the vendors that the hackers disguised as were in charge of sending mails and producing the signature Trump hats.

Wisconsin Republican Party reveals that it notified the FBI on 23rd October 2020 after they found out they were being scammed the day before. For now, the FBI has not issued any statement about the crime. It is still unclear if the hackers did it for financial reasons or to sabotage Trump’s re-election campaign.
