How Important Are The Sun And Moon To Life On Earth?

The Sun is regarded as the center of the earth’s solar system while the moon is its satellite. Without these heavenly bodies, there would be no life on earth as we know it.

Despite the immense size of the sun, when you look at it from the earth, it is almost the same size as the moon. This is because the distance of the moon is way shorter than that of the moon.

Thus, the moon’s diameter of about 3,474 Km is relatively the same as the sun’s 1.4 million Km diameter. Both the sun and moon are important to every living thing on earth.

Even in times past when there were no proper instruments to observe these bodies, people had always revered them. There are many ancient drawings and rituals that showed worship of the sun and moon. People have always figured that they played a role in their lives but most times, it was in the mystical sense of it.

Thanks to scientific advancement now, we understand what the roles of the sun and moon are to some extent. The sun, for example, is not just the source of light but also needed heat.

Without the sun’s heat, the earth will be ice cold not to forget that all sources of water will also be frozen up. Green plants that serve as food and the source of oxygen that animals breathe also need the light of the sun to grow.

The sun’s gravity pulls the planet toward the sun, thus, keeping the planet moving in an orbit around the sun. Because of this gravitational pull, all the planets in the solar system orbit around it.

Despite being smaller and less powerful than the sun, the moon controls the earth’s ocean levels. These tidal forces are also a product of the moon’s gravitational force on the earth. Also, we have such things as seasons thanks to the moon.

Another important fact about the moon is its contribution to space exploration. Its close proximity to the earth spurred scientists from different countries to aim to reach it. After such landmark journeys by such spacecraft as Luna 1, Luna 9 and Apollo 11 space scientists then aimed for Mars.
