Microsoft has finally confirmed extending its partnership with OpenAI in a blog post that mentions ‘multiyear, multibillion dollar investment’.
If you have been tracking news about these two, you have likely heard that this investment is worth $10 billion, although neither of them confirmed the exact amount in their announcements.
The American computer company had previously injected money into the AI developer in 2019 and 2021. And it claims that the extension would help accelerate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research.

For Microsoft, the next moves include improving its AI infrastructure in Azure and deploying it on a global scale, bundle OpenAI models across consumer and enterprise products, and retain the exclusive right to provide cloud infrastructure for OpenAI workloads.

Meanwhile, OpenAI’s goal with the partnership is to secure the necessary funding to continue providing AI to benefit all people as it calls itself a capped-profit company.
A capped profit company, also known as a benefit corporation, is a type of for-profit business that is required to consider the impact of its decisions on society and the environment, in addition to maximizing profits for shareholders. This means that they have legal responsibility to balance the financial interests of shareholders with the positive impact they can have on society and the environment. They are also required to publish an annual benefit report that outlines their progress in meeting their social and environmental goals.
In related news, OpenAI has launched a premium version of its chatbot, ChatGPT, which is allegedly priced at about $42 per month.
