Stress acne is caused by a rise in stress hormones. Here, a rise in cortisol levels messes with the oil glands, causing acne flare-ups.
The rising levels in cortisol upset the sebum balance in the skin which leads to the clogging of pores and the development of acne. This is why they are sometimes confused with hormonal acne, which is also caused by a disruption in the body’s day-to-day functioning.
How does stress acne appear on the face
Stress acne, like hormonal acne, can be easily spotted as they occur at the same place repeatedly. You might spot a few pimples along the jawline due to a rise in androgen levels before getting a period. For stress acne, it happens in the oiliest areas of the face.
It is also recognised by the appearance of enlarged pores, greasiness, blackheads, whiteheads, and uneven or grainy skin. This can wreak havoc on the T-zone (the T-shaped area of a person’s face that includes the forehead, nose, and chin). Stress acne can also cause redness and itchiness on the oily t-zone.

Treatment of stress acne
So, how exactly do you deal with stress acne? The trick is to tackle it step-by-step. Topical treatments like salicylic acid can neutralise excessive oil production and kill acne-causing bacteria. If it’s something deeper, like a stress cyst, you can treat it with a hot or cold compress. Just hold it on the spot for a couple of minutes and repeat till the size is reduced.
Pay extra attention to your t-zone and use a mattifying product like a toner to combat excess oil. Drink lots of water, watch your diet, and manage your stress levels with exercise and medication. A good night’s sleep can also be the answer to many of your skin issues.
