An illusionist, Jadugar Mandrake, disappeared for what seems like forever after he tried to a risky stunt in the Ganges River. Jadugar Mandrake whose real name was Chanchal Lahiri was a professional magician and escapologist.

His corpse was later recovered the next day after a thorough search that lasted a full day.

According to spectators at the event, the magician had reassured the crowd that he had done this type of trick before. Jadugar said:

“I was inside a bulletproof glass box tied with chains and locks and dropped down from Howrah bridge. Then I came out within 29 seconds.”

Then he also mentioned that it may be more difficult to pull off this time. He revealed:

“If I can open it up then it will be magic, but if I can’t it will be tragic.”

This was before the 40-year-old magician allowed his assistants to bind him with chains. Then they put him in a cage before finally lowering him into the Ganges River.

He was supposed to free himself and be out of harm’s way in a matter of seconds. But the spectators got a shocker as, after some time, the illusionist had still not surfaced. Then, shock gave way to panic as frantic efforts to save Mandrake proved futile.

The magician was simply nowhere to be found. He had not only disappeared from the cage but seemingly — the surface of the earth. Authorities launched a search party that did not turn up anything tangible until the next day.

Escapologists are popular for bringing the element of shock to performances. They put themselves in dangerous situations that seem impossible to escape from. Then they escape, which is the whole point of the stunt in the first place.

In situations where they fail to escape, it leads to their death. Why do many choose to undergo these dangerous stunts? The answer is simple: people want to see them pull off the impossible.
