Instagram extend Story length to 60 seconds

Instagram is extending the limit of Instagram Story to 60 seconds, from the previous 15 seconds limit. This change means that longer videos no longer have to be broken into fragments.

However, the feature is rolling out for all Instagram users after the company completed the testing phase for few users. In an email to TechCrunch, Meta’s spokesperson said:

“We are always working on ways to improve the Stories experience. Now, you’ll be able to play and create Stories continuously for up to 60 seconds, instead of being automatically cut into 15 second clips.”

While the change makes it easier to share content on Stories, it makes it more difficult to differentiate this feature from Reels, which also allows users share videos of up to 60 seconds.

Increasing the length of Stories is in keeping with Meta’s desire to have more video content on its platform and keep competing with TikTok on that front.

Its desire to beat TikTok has seen it employ lots of tactics in the last 12 months or so to measure up. However, not all of its changes have gone down well with users. Recall that several o them, including celebs like Kim Kardashian, had complained that the platform was making it harder to see photos from people you actually know in real life. Instead, it was promoting video content from users you don’t even follow.

In a bid to give users more control, Instagram rolled out new timeline view options. You can read more about that here.
