One of iOS 14 new features is the picture-in-picture mode but that might not be available if you’re using YouTube. It seems YouTube has blocked iOS 14 devices from playing videos in picture-in-picture mode unless they’re paying for YouTube Premium.

Picture-in-picture mode allows users to watch a video in a small window and still do other things on their iPhone. For example, you can watch a video and keep chatting or checking emails; the mode allows you to multitask.

As demonstrated by The Verge’s Jay Peters; If you play a video on YouTube’s website in Safari on your iPhone and take it full screen; you’ll see a picture-in-picture icon at the top-left corner of your screen after tapping on playback controls. Tap the icon, you’ll notice the video briefly goes into its own window before going back to the normal spot on YouTube’s site. Trying to go back to the home screen while watching a video in full screen will only produce a brief picture-in-picture mode flicker then it disappears.

Jay then demonstrated the issue in a post on his Twitter handle;

However, a MacRumors report shows that it is possible to watch YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode if they’re embedded on a website on iOS 14. The mode works with YouTube videos in Safari on an iPad, Premium account or not.

YouTube limits the ability to play videos in the background to YouTube Premium subscribers on its app. So it is unclear if YouTube wants to restrict picture-in-picture to its paying subscribers and did this intentionally.
