Modern times, s****l liberation, LGBTQ and body positive movements. Some would argue that these are some of the perks of the 21st Century. Millennials are destigmatising s****l liberation. The idea of women being objects of desire is being turned into a drive for empowerment. The sting is being taken out of s*x before marriage. Young people are getting more liberated and no longer get shamed for expressing their s****l needs. Netflix’s new TV series “Big Mouth” and “S*x Education” just portray what the act is about these days.
Consensual casual s*x is now easier to get with the rise of dating apps and social networking sites. BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Dominance and Submission and Sadomasochism), threesomes and orgies are no longer bizarre concepts. The more, the merrier it seems these days.
No s*x or lone s*x
Despite all these, psychologists deduce that young adults are having fewer s*x partners. Researchers also say that the rate at which young people below 20 are having s*x has significantly dropped compared to the nineties. The question to ask now is, how are young people getting off? Is the fact that s*x is more acceptable making young people indulge less? Maybe the fact that it is now so accessible is making young people lose interest. Maybe the idea of a forbidden practice was the reason people were having more s*x in the past. There is also a probability that technology may be responsible.
A new British research suggests that 41% of people aged 16 to 44 had s*x at least once a week in the last month. The number of people reporting no s*x in the past month has increased.
According to a BBC report on s*x statistics in the UK,
“The proportion reporting s*x 10 or more times in the past month has fallen – from 20.6% to 13.2% among women and from 20.2% to 14.4% among men between 2001 and 2012. The average number of times that 35 to 44-year-olds reported having s*x in the past month fell from four to two among women and from four to three among men.”
No doubt a lot of young people are embracing celibacy. The thought of several STDs, pregnancy, childcare or even soul ties for some is a valid reason some young people are drawing back from s****l encounters. The freedom of choice now means more women realise that they do not need to have an offspring from their loins to gain respect. They can decide to keep their figures intact and pay surrogates to get the job done while staying single parents. The expense and attention a child requires has made a lot of young people are perhaps not willing to invest in.
The concept of marriage is also one that lots of young people are increasingly shying away from. Experts revealed that about 60% of adults under 35 now live without a spouse or a partner. The economic situation is often being blamed for this as people argue that catering for a family is expensive and time-consuming but young people will rather live their best lives.
Technology to blame?
The advent of technology is supposed to heighten and improve every experience, s*x included. However, it seems to be giving young people more room to get off solo. The accessibility to p*********y, s*x toys and s*x itself might be responsible.
There is a popular belief that people have more desire for what they cannot have. But if at the click of a device, you can get a s*x partner from an app, why then do it at all. It seems as though young people are seeking a deeper meaning and deeper connection than s*x. Some say there is no need to try to form a connection with another human being and probably get emotionally involved and eventually get hurt when they can just get off by watching a few anime clips and move on with their lives.
The idea of getting off solo has reduced the desires for human connection and the need to seek out a life companion. Maybe the older generation is to blame for the obscured mentality young people have about marriage. Maybe social media has killed human interaction. Whatever the reasons, young people might be going on a lonely path.
