Jeannie Mai Says She’s Recovering After Successful Emergency Surgery

TV host Jeannie Mai recently announced that she has undergone emergency surgery.

On Thursday, The Real co-host shared a post-surgery update with her fans. She was diagnosed with epiglottitis, a potentially life-threatening condition. It occurs when the epiglottis, a small cartilage lid that covers the windpipe swells, blocking the flow of air into your lungs.

“4 DAYS POST SURGERY,” Mai, 41, wrote in an Instagram on Thursday.

In the mirror photo, Mai, who sports a T-shirt and glasses. She stands in the bathroom of her hospital room as she gives a thumbs-up to the camera.

Mai’s diagnosis forced her to withdraw from competing on season 29 of Dancing with the Stars.

ABC’s reality dance competition series, host Tyra Banks announced that Mai had recorded a video for DWTS audiences during Monday night’s episode. In the video, she opened up about the procedure, admitting that she was devastated that her journey on “Dancing with the Stars” has to end this way.

“I found out that I have a throat abscess, where my tonsils and my throat had gotten so infected that it started permeating to the rest of the areas behind my neck and my ears that I had to get emergency surgery, which is why I’m here now,” she said.

After the surgery, Mai’s doctor said: “Everything went great”. He also disclosed some alarming news was also disclosed to her in the hospital. “If you would have waited one more day, your throat would have closed up,” he said.
