Summary:
- Twitter is removing its legacy verification badge system and organizations must pay $1,000 plus $50 for every account linked to them for a gold verification badge.
- Free users will have limited reach, with only verified accounts being eligible for ‘For You’ recommendations and poll voting.
- These changes were announced without the public voting which Elon Musk had said would precede major decisions.
Under Elon Musk, Twitter has constantly been changing and April 2023 will likely see some more of these changes. One of the first and likely most talked about change is the disappearance of legacy verification badges.
Legacy verification is the old way that Twitter uses to verify notable accounts to limit impersonation. The company’s new owner has been a big critic of the method. “The way in which they were given out was corrupt and nonsensical,” he said in a tweet in December 2022.
In its place, Twitter users must all pay for Twitter blue subscription to have the opportunity to be verified. However, this development has been met wit lots of criticism. Many of the critics point out that Musk his just trying to raise money after splashing $44 billion on acquiring the social media company and continually struggling to keep it running.

This is not all that is coming to verification. It turns out that organisations who want the distinctive gold verification badge must pay $1,000. They also have to pay additional $50 for every account linked to them. This other development has led to news companies like the New York Times, CNN, Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, BuzzFeed, POLITICO, Vox, and others openly refusing to pay.
The New York Times official account, which has 55 million followers, lost its verification status late on Sunday. Although, CNN still has its.
Besides the verification fiasco that seeks to get more paying subscribers, Elon Musk announced limit the reach of free users as well. He said that only Twitter Blue subscribers will be allowed to appear on the ‘For You’ recommended page and participate in Twitter polls.
Starting April 15th, only verified accounts will be eligible to be in For You recommendations.
The is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle.
Voting in polls will require verification for same reason.

All these major changes come after Musk promised to stop making decision without first putting it up to a public vote. Also, you’ll recall that he said he was looking for a CEO to run the company in his place after he promised to step down. The two statements seem to have been mere talk or outright deception.
