The last couple of years have been anything but smooth for Kickstarter CEO Aziz Hasan, who is stepping down in April 2022.
Aziz Hasan had assumed leadership during one of the company’s most trying times and things kept getting difficult with him at the helm. Although, in an exit interview he did with Fast Company, he mentioned his achievements, including $6 billion raised in pledges by 20 million backers; things were still bumpy for him.
Barely months after he took over the job, he and the management came under scrutiny for not allowing workers to unionize. And while the workers eventually forced their hand the next year, Hasan’s moment of peace lasted long enough for the COVID-19 pandemic to strike.

During those early days, he oversaw the layoff of nearly 40 per cent of its employees and struggled with the drop in revenue that came with reduced new projects. This is not all. Recently, the company had to apologise to users for its attempt to move Kickstarter to blockchain. According to the complaints, blockchain causes environmental issues, allows scams, thrives on speculation, and has high risk.
On the back of these, Aziz Hasan says he is moving forward. Although, he will still be part of the company as an advisor while COO Sean Leow takes his role in the interim. Kickstater is a public benefit company that helps bring creative ideas to life through crowdfunding projects.
