Within two days, the soccer star’s carousel post of he and his teammates lifting the world cup trophy became the most liked Instagram picture of all time. As of when this article was published, the post had over 62 million likes. It beat the photo by @world_record_egg, which had 56.8 million likes.

The egg photo was posted in an effort to surpass a 2018 photo of Kylie Jenner’s newborn daughter, Stormi. On the top 10 list of most liked Instagram photos, there are three different posts from Messi and the World Cup trophy. It is important to point out that these photos are even more recent than the one that currently holds the record and are likely to garner more likes with time.
On Twitter, despite not having an official account himself, Lionel Messi’s World Cup campaign was the most talked about thing during December 2022. According to numbers compiled by Twitter’s Bruna Piovesan, the Argentine was the most mentioned player of the tournament.
Also among the top five moments, his country featured three times and it was the most mentioned team as well. Undoubtedly, Messi was the biggest celebrity of the World Cup 2022 and is only fitting that he ended it with a win.
Other players who were most talked about were France’s Kylian Mbappe, Brazil’s Neymar Jr, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and South Korea’s Son Heung-min.
