Nigerian Afrobeats superstars Wizkid and Tems’ song “Essence” has been certified Platinum in the US by the RCA after it hit over 40,000 sales in the country.
This record-breaking feat makes it the first Nigerian song to be certified Platinum in America. The singers received the platinum plaque each for “Essence” on Monday after Wizkid’s show on Sunday night October 4th, 2021 at the NOVO event space in Los Angeles. The two also performed together at the event.

In August, “Essence” became the most searched song on Shazam in the US. In a post on its Instagram page on Monday 30th August 2021, the music application said the mid-tempo track has become the most “Shazamed” song in the US.

“Essence” is the 11th track off “Made In Lagos”, Wizkid’s fourth studio album, which was released in October 2020 and features Tems.
The track has so far enjoyed widespread acceptance from music lovers and also became the highest-charting Nigerian song on the Billboard Hot 100.
After four weeks, “Essence” recorded another leap, climbing by 23 spots on the Hot 100 to achieve 59th place.
Following a surprise remix with Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, the hit track climbed to 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Barack Obama, the former president of the United States, had listed the hit song among his favourites for 2020.
