On 14 April 2022, Mark Zuckerberg announced a major WhatsApp change called WhatsApp Communities; here is everything you need to know about the feature.
WhatsApp Communities will serve as a collection of smaller groups that are related. Think of them as a folder for smaller folders or a header for more minor subheadings.
For example, you can have a general work community for individual groups of departments or projects. Zuckerberg’s example in his Facebook post was of an overall community for parents at a school that consists of separate groups of different classes.
He adds that the feature was built because of feedback from users. “A lot of people tell us they want to use WhatsApp for this since it’s the quickest way to stay in touch with people,” the tech boss wrote.

Communities on WhatsApp will serve as a central place for announcements and bring valuable tools for admins. However, with the new feature, WhatsApp groups also get some updates. They now have new reactions, large file-sharing options, and group calls that can take more people.
Zuckerberg assures users that WhatsApp will not outgrow its original purpose of being a ‘one-to-one’ text messaging platform.
WhatsApp Communities started rolling out ‘slowly’ on 14 April 2022 and will reach users worldwide in the ‘coming months.’ There is no mention of where and where users are to expect the feature first.
Also, in the concluding part of his announcement, Mark says that Meta is building community messaging features for its other social media arms – Messenger, Facebook, and Instagram. Here is his statement in full:
