Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a statement said “Meta has developed what we believe is the world’s fastest AI supercomputer.” “We’re calling it RSC for AI Research SuperCluster and it’ll be complete later this year.”

What is an AI supercomputer? These are complex computers used to process vast amounts of information and calculations. High-performance computers (HPCs) rely on numerous interconnected processors to utilize data at fast speeds. AI supercomputers take that a pace higher, these computers carry out more tasks per second than regular HPCs using the same hardware. Top500.org usually publish an independent list of these computers twice a year.

Meta already has large companies this technology will be catering to. For example, Artificial intelligence in these “AI supercomputers” will be able to detect hate speech for the Facebook community. The company has finished phase 1 of the project and will be done with the second stage by the middle of the year.

Elsewhere, this will be used for Instagram augmented reality plans and finally in its AR hardware project. Ultimately, this supercomputer would be powering the future of its metaverse. Meta engineers Kevin Lee and Shubho gave more insights on the use cases of this AI supercomputer.

Some Impressive Metrics

“RSC will help Meta’s AI researchers build new and better AI models that can learn from trillions of examples; work across hundreds of different languages; seamlessly analyze text, images, and video together; develop new augmented reality tools; and much more,” they say.

It’s all impressive though, Meta is building this computer with 16,000 total GPUs. This is quite higher than Microsoft’s 10,000 GPUs AI supercomputer with research lab OpenAI. How well the processing results of this new AI supercomputer will tell in its final products.
