Metaverse app Horizon Worlds seeing less users, even within Meta

Horizon Worlds, a virtual reality app built by Meta for Metaverse, is seeing very few users, even among the company’s employees.

The consensus is that the app has too many bugs and suffers from poor quality, making it unappealing. However, Meta execs do not want that to be an excuse for people working in the company.

In September, Vishal Shah, the VP of Metaverse at Meta, sent a memo to employees instructing them to fix the ‘quality gaps and performance issues before the app gets to more users.

“Since launching late last year, we have seen that the core thesis of Horizon Worlds — a synchronous social network where creators can build engaging worlds — is strong,” Shah said in the memo, which The Verge obtained. “But currently feedback from our creators, users, playtesters, and many of us on the team is that the aggregate weight of papercuts, stability issues, and bugs is making it too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon. Simply put, for an experience to become delightful and retentive, it must first be usable and well crafted.”

Besides confirming the issues with running the app, he charged employees to use it more frequently and mentioned that managers would be held accountable for their teams’ presence on Horizon.

Earlier in 2022, Meta claimed that Horizon World had hit 300,000 users already. The company even hinted at releasing a web version to reach more users soon. With this latest development, it is likely that plans for the web version have been shifted.

Despite several teases from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse still seems like some fictional tech to many people. By contrast, it is already available to early testers. With the Project Cambria VR headset about to debut anytime soon, it is likely that we will see tech enthusiasts, like startup CEOs and YouTube streamers, start sharing clips of themselves in the digital world.

It is not yet clear if its struggling popularity is a result of the concept being difficult for many to grab or the fact that the gadgets needed to enjoy them would burn a big hole in the ordinary person’s pocket.
