Microsoft Buys CyberX To Hasten And Secure IoT Deployments

American software giants, Microsoft confirms today, 22nd June 2020, that it has completed the purchase of CyberX. It revealed that this new acquisition will ‘accelerate and secure customers’ IoT deployments’.

Acknowledging the importance of Internet of Things (IoT) in every business sector; Microsoft said in a blog post:

“While the benefits of IoT are well established and significant, one of the biggest hurdles for customers is securing IoT devices – both for new digitization initiatives as well as for legacy Operational Technology and industrial control system environments.”

Additionally, it mentioned that its IoT security solutions via Azure is lacking in some areas. This, it said, despite the large number of people and businesses already using the software. Thus, in order to solve these issues, Microsoft bought CyberX. The company hopes that with CyberX under its umbrella, it will be able to:

  • Give customers visibility into what IoT devices are already connected to their networks.
  • Manage the security of existing IoT devices.

Microsoft adds that CyberX will ‘complement the existing Azure IoT security capabilities’. Also, it will extend it to existing devices in industrial IoT, Operational Technology, and infrastructure scenarios. Microsoft will also integrate CyberX into other products like: the cloud-native, next-generation security information and event management (SIEM), and many more.

CyberX itself is a software solution company that offers IoT/Industrial Control System (ICS) products to clients. On its page, the company also announced that it is now a Microsoft Company. It also tells clients that it has joined the ‘Microsoft Intelligent Security Association’.

CyberX joins the ranks of startups that Microsoft has acquired in 2020; the company had also bought Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch Networks (both 5G networking companies). It had also purchased a robotic automation firm, Softmotive in May 2020 and last week, it clinched ADMR Software (a data modelling startup).
