Microsoft is the latest tech company to have fallen to hacking group Lapsus$ as it confirms that the hackers stole its source code. Should you be worried if you use Microsoft? The software provider says no; here is why.
Lapsus$ seems to be the hottest group in the hacking industry at this time. Nvidia, Samsung, and Okta are just some of its victims, and the list keeps growing.
With Microsoft confirming that it was hacked, it means that the bad actors should be taken seriously. Although, their campaign seems to be more of an information-gathering thing and a disruptive one (which is slightly better).
However, Microsoft assures users that the hack does not put them in danger. “Our investigation has found a single account had been compromised, granting limited access. Microsoft does not rely on the secrecy of code as a security measure and viewing source code does not lead to elevation of risk,” it said in a statement.

In addition, its cybersecurity response teams have prevented further unauthorised activity and remediated the compromised account. The affected products seem to be Bing, Bing Maps, and Cortana — two things that not many Microsoft users even use.
The company also provided security steps that other companies can use to deal with the tactics –DEV-0537– that Lapsus$ used to compromise its account.
