Microsoft has just announced that it is partnering with the Artificial Intelligence company, OpenAI. The Elon Musk-founded company is carrying out research that will enable it to build supercomputing AI technology for its cloud.

The partnership, which is both financial and technological, will see Microsoft invest $1 billion in OpenAI. The company was originally launched by Musk and American seed accelerator Y Combinator chairman, Sam Altman in December 2015. The company got a one-billion-dollar endowment fund at the time.

Musk who had since left the company joined out of concern of the potential dangers of AI. The company has since created technology that helps computers train robots, understand language and do simple menial tasks. It also interestingly trained the computer to beat humans at a computer game.

OpenAI through the partnership with Microsoft will use the Microsoft Azure cloud exclusively to develop and run its software. The two companies will also now work together to build new AI systems. According to the press release by Microsoft, the two companies have a flare for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This is the type of AI used in movies and TV shows for learning and understanding.

It explains,

“OpenAI and Microsoft’s vision is for Artificial General Intelligence to work with people to help solve currently intractable multi-disciplinary problems, including global challenges such as climate change, more personalized healthcare and education.”

The two companies first partnered in 2016 when OpenAI used Microsoft cloud as its preferred cloud. Microsoft also got increased access to the AI company’s technology.
