Microsoft has announced that it is suspending all it political donations for the upcoming 2022 election cycle for any politician and organisations that voted to object to the electoral college certifying the 2020 election or supported attempting to overturn the election in which president Joe Biden won.

The company had temporarily suspended all its political contributions after the attack on the Capitol on 6th January 2021. The tech giant took the time to decide “whether to suspend further donations to individuals who voted against the certification of the Electoral College”.

With this announcement, it has made a more permanent decision in respect to the coming election cycle. The decision will only affect politicians who attempted to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. It will still continue donations to other politicians.

The company also announced a new company program it’s calling the Democracy Forward Initiative. The initiative is to act as an outlet for Microsoft employees to donate to organizations that look to push for campaign finance reform and protect voting rights instead of supporting politicians.

Another change Microsoft is making in its political identity is the name of its Political Action Committee (PAC). The PAC was previously known as the Microsoft Political Action Committee (MSPAC). Now, it is naming the group as the Microsoft Corporation Stakeholders Voluntary PAC (MSVPAC). The name change will help it better reflect that the group is “funded exclusively by voluntary donations of Microsoft stakeholders.”

Microsoft is following in the footsteps of Google who suspended political donations in January 2021. It announced that its NetPAC “will not be making any contributions this cycle to any member of Congress who voted against the certification of the election results”.

AT&T, Amazon, Verizon, Comcast, Dell, and Intel have all also indefinitely suspended all donations to the same group.
