Microsoft Offers US Employees Unlimited Time-Off

Microsoft is launching a new Discretionary Time Off policy for employees in the US to get unlimited time off. According to an internal memo by the company’s chief people officer, Kathleen Hogan, the policy only affects salaried workers.

It will go into effect on January 16 and will be open for new employees, who, under its former policies, would have not qualified to take time off. Additionally, it will not affect the official time off that it already gives employees.

In the US, Microsoft already gives its staff 10 corporate holidays, leaves of absence, sick and mental heath time off, and time away for jury duty or bereavement.

“How, when, and where we do our jobs has dramatically changed. And as we’ve transformed, modernizing our vacation policy to a more flexible model was a natural next step,” Hogan’s email read.

Employees who have vacation balance from not taking time off over the past months will receive a one-time payout in April 2023.

However, hourly workers will not get the same unlimited time off offer. The company cited limitations by federal and state wage and hour laws as its reason. Also, workers outside the US are not eligible because of similar restrictions, laws in their regions.

Microsoft is not the first to redefine how much time and when workers can take time off in the US. It is borrowing a leaf from what others like Salesforce, LinkedIn, Oracle, and Netflix have done.

At a time when tech layoffs are causing employees anxiety, it is refreshing to see that its not all gloomy for those that remain in the industry.
