Netflix Games Will Be Available For iOS Users Despite Apple’s Restrictions

Reports say Netflix will make available its games for iOS users through the App store despite Apple’s restrictions. Netflix games are already available for Android users via the Google Play Store, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says otherwise.

According to him, the Apple App store policies will prevent the streaming platform from publishing its own games. Apple doesn’t allow third-party apps from publishing their games on the App store.

This has affected the likes of Google’s Stadia, Xbox Cloud, and even Nvidia’s GeForce Now. The only way around this restriction is to publish the game via a web app.

Gurman’s Power On newsletter points that Netflix would find a way around the Apple restriction by making the games non-downloadable or playable via the Netflix app.  Eventually, He believes For the App Store, Netflix will eventually go to the cloud for gaming.

Android users in faraway Poland were the first to test Netflix games, the company made the announcement recently. The streaming firm tried out these games, Stranger Things 1984 and Stranger Things 3.

The games are not streamed but downloaded, and you won’t be able to play them in the Netflix application. When you open any of the two games, you will be asked for your Netflix sign-in details.

Netflix has followed up on its intention to launch games on its platform after it confirmed the hiring of Mike Verdu.

Coming in with loads of experience in the gaming sector, Mike Verdu has worked previously in Electronic Arts, Oculus, Zynga, and Atari. He will be leading the gaming team of the video streaming platform.

The California-based company chief operating Greg Peters mentioned during a recent earnings call of the company’s gaming intent. “No doubt that games are going to be an important form of entertainment and an important sort of modality to deepen that fan experience.”

So, yeah if you watch movies from Netflix on your big screen or mobile screens, there is a high chance you are into gaming of some sort.

Adding games makes Netflix a compelling watch, amidst its many competitors such as Hulu, Apple TV+, and HBO Max. Since the pandemic, users have been glued to their screens for content.

Netflix gaming works just fine on the Android platform, but things will have to change for it to thrive on the iOS App Store. Gurman says “Apple will need to change its rules or grant Netflix an exemption.”
