Netflix is trying to get rid of inactive subscribers on its service by asking them if they would prefer to cancel their subscriptions after a period of prolonged inactivity. The automated prompt will also make it easier for customers to deactivate their subscriptions.
“We’ve always thought it should be easy to sign up and to cancel. So, as always, anyone who cancels their account and then rejoins within 10 months will still have their favorites, profiles, viewing preferences, and account details just as they left them,” Eddy Wu, Netflix’s director of product innovation, wrote in a blog post.
Netflix had started prompting its subscribers who have been inactive since 18th May 2020. Subscribers who haven’t used the service in two years or within one year of their initial sign-up (for newer customers) were informed that they could keep their membership or have it canceled before the next billing cycle.
The inactive subscribers make up less than 1 percent of Netflix’s 183 million subscriber base. The cancelations will begin on 1st June 2020.

Subscribers in the inactive classification will start seeing emails and in-app notifications according to the blog. They’ll also have to confirm, when the prompts appear, that they prefer to remain subscribed or Netflix will automatically cancel their subscription.
At the moment, customers who want to cancel their subscriptions have to do it themselves in the app.
Netflix has enjoyed huge patronage amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Million of people forced to remain indoors have turned to the app for films and entertainment.
