New Sony Patent Allows It Identify PlayStation Users By How They Use Controllers

Sony has reportedly filed a patent in the US that allows it to identify PlayStation users by the way they handle controllers. This new patent will help users solve issues regarding unauthorised access to profiles.

Usually, a PlayStation console keeps users logged in after they perform a sign-in on it. This means that after you log in with your user profile on a console if you don’t log out, others who use the console can use your PlayStation profile as well.

Also, while entering PlayStation passwords in public places, others may see it as well. Which is another problem as many players have to log in to track their game progress.

Thus, Sony’s solution to this unique problem is an ‘apparatus, system and method of authentication’. SegmentNext, a videogame blog, revealed this patent recently. According to its report, the company may release this technology in time for PlayStation 5 users.

Part of the patent reads; “A system for identifying a user of a controller includes a controller having one or more sensors configured to detect interaction with the controller by the user and a transmitter configured to transmit telemetry data based on outputs of one or more of the sensors… providing a method and an apparatus for determining an identity of a user holding a handheld controller.”

It seems Sony is telling users that when this technology becomes available, all they have to do is pick up a controller and the console will recognise you and log you in. Additionally, it appears that even the PS5 camera and other accessories will have this feature.

The camera will likely use eye-tracking and image processing to identify players. PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers have been touted to be unique since its unveiling. Now, we are seeing another reason why it is so.

Measuring how a player positions the controller, smaller motions indiscernible to the eyes and even how long they push buttons are unique; the patent says that the technology will calculate all this with an inbuilt algorithm and create a profile for users.

For now, the US Patent Office has just published the patent but Sony still has to wait for its approval.
