The National Football League (NFL) and Verizon have partnered to create the first 5G Super Bowl. Both parties are hoping the Super Bowl will give them a better idea of the potential for new fan experiences. This will likely include improved revenue streams and operational efficiencies the technology will bring.
The Super Bowl will hold on 2nd February 2020 in Miami. This is the first time in its history that the stadium and much of the city around it will be outfitted with 5G technology.
5G is the next-generation wireless technology that boasts of faster connection speeds which will, in turn, create a wider range of opportunities.
The Technology’s inclusion is expected to help the leagues and teams entice fans to buy tickets for live games. It will also expand fan engagement even if they are not in the stadium during the games.

The applications for the network in the city of Miami will still be relatively limited at the moment because the technology is still in its early days. However, the league is working to figure out how to put the technology to maximum use.
Fans will also only be able to connect to the network if they have a 5G-enabled device. This is also an issue on its own because 5G devices are not yet widely in use.
5G to give Super Bowl fans faster download speeds
Both the NFL and Verizon expect the fans to be excited about the potential of technology in the sport.
“I can’t imagine going through these experiences and not being excited about the technology and what it will enable for sports and for the NFL and NFL fans. It’s fantastic for fans because it brings the latest tech to their fingertips,” Verizon’s Chief Product Development Officer Nicki Palmer said to CNN.
While with 4G, whenever huge groups of people gather, the network gets congested and wireless speeds slow down. 5G, however, is 100 times faster than the 4G network. Therefore, it should be able to handle hundreds of connected devices without slowing down.
Verizon says that 5G-enabled devices at the Super Bowl can expect speeds of up to one gigabit per second.
The NFL’s fan engagement app, OnePass, will also have a new feature that will let people with 5G devices connected to the stadium’s network watch a multi-camera live stream of the game.
This feature will allow them to see the game from five different angles. Giving them a view beyond their seat, to pause and rewind the game. Meaning they don’t have to wait for a replay on the big screen.
