Peter Obi Rally-Related Terms Dominated Twitter Trends On Nigeria’s Independence Day

On October 1, 2022, Nigeria’s Independence Day, a rally for presidential aspirant Peter Obi was the most-tweeted topic on Twitter.

With terms like #LagosRally generating about 120,000+ tweets every hour, starting from 10 AM local time and #4MillionMarch4PeterObi doing the same numbers an hour later for most of the day, it was undoubtedly the most significant trend of Saturday.

Meanwhile, #IndependenceDay and #HappyIndependenceDay terms were generating around 20,000+ tweets all through the day. Even the hashtag #PeterObi had been doing over 100,000 tweets in the early parts of Saturday before the rally-related hashtag took over.

Later in the day, as football trends took over, the rally tweets also kept climbing and peaked at more than 200,000 tweets towards evening. Stats from GetDayTrends showed that the rally was popular well into the next day, Sunday.

Besides trends on football teams like #Arsenal and #Liverpool, the Netflix movie Anikulapo was also a popular topic on the day. The politically motivated rally was in support of Peter Obi, a presidential aspirant for the 2023 election in Nigeria. His followers have coined the term ‘Obidient’ for themselves and have summarily taken social media platforms by storm.

The rally, planned to coincide with the country’s Independence Day celebration, had generated so much buzz as the statistics show. Even two days after it, videos from the event still dominated Nigerian social media circles. Punch reported that there were versions of the rally in Ekiti, Kaduna, Asaba, and Bauchi on the same day.
