Germany has qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals after sending off Nigeria with three goals without reply. In spite of the VAR debate, it was an ultimate victory and Germany has become the first team through to the last eight.

Germany was yet to concede a goal after their three opening group games. However, they found their shooting boots in the final match against South Africa, winning 4-0. This being the third time they have conceded a goal, they are more than prepared for the quarterfinals.

The first goal in the Nigeria vs Germany match was scored by Germany’s veteran striker, Alexandra Popp, on her 100th international appearance. VAR was used to confirm the legitimacy of the goal. It then played a controversial role in Germany’s second goal.

Sara Däbritz powered home the second goal with a penalty. Lea Schuller marked her first World Cup start with a fantastic goal that crowned the 3 – 0 defeat of Nigerians.

For Nigerians, this was the second time they made it to the knockout phases since 1999, when they met defeat to Brazil in the quarterfinals.
