Nintendo is more optimistic in its financial projections for the Financial year buoyed by its Switch console sales. The company projects that it will make more than $4.3 billion in operating profit by the end of March 2021.

The figure represents a 50 per cent increase from the 300 billion Yen ($2.8 billion) figure it forecast in May 2020. In the first six months of the year, the company made $2.79 billion in operating profit. Nintendo also now expects to ship up to 24 million Switch consoles this fiscal year, improving its previous estimate of 19 million.

The company shipped 6.86 million Switch consoles between July 2020 and September 2020. This is an increase of over 40 per cent year-on-year. This also puts the consoles total sale at 68.3 million since its launch in 2017. Nintendo shipped 5.68 million consoles the whole of 2019.

To put the quarter into perspective, Nintendo sales in the third quarter of 2019 were buoyed by the launch of the cheaper Switch Lite variant. The launch increased Nintendo’s shipments by over 50 percent from its numbers in 2018.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons shipped more than 10 million copies in 2019, helping to boost the overall sale of the Switch console. In the last quarter, the game has sold more than three and a half million units. Overall, the game has now sold 26.04 million copies. This makes it the second best-selling Switch game after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

On the other hand, its game releases in the last quarter have not had similar success. Only Super Mario 3D All-Stars, selling 5.21 million copies by the end of September 2020, and Paper Mario: The Origami King, selling 2.82 million units in the same timeframe have had some success.
