Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded version of its popular Switch game console in 2020 according to reports. Bloomberg and Taiwan’s Economic Daily News claim that the new model will come out in early 2021 citing supply chain sources.

The upgrade is also going to feature a performance upgrade to the Switch. The upgrade will be the first of its kind by Nintendo since the debut of the Switch in March 2017.

According to Bloomberg, “[Nintendo] has looked into including more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics”. The Economic Daily News, however, mentions improved visuals.

Although Nintendo released two new Switch models in 2019, they were only a more power-efficient version of the original hardware. The change was to enable a smaller form factor and better battery life without significant performance improvements.

Bloomberg adds that the new model will be released alongside a stronger lineup of games. This could explain the company’s lack of big titles announcements this holiday season to the disdain of its fans. Again if it does, Nintendo will have to compete with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

New titles like Metroid Prime 4 and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which it announced years ago will also be befitting accompaniment to a potentially more powerful console.

The Nintendo Switch has done very well, selling more than 61 million consoles as of July 2020. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has also been a best seller, contributing millions to the number of consoles sold.
