Nintendo is pausing shipments of the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite from its production facilities in China and Vietnam to Japan, amid global shortages of the popular video game consoles.
The company confirmed to CNN that there will be no new shipments of the Nintendo Switch and the Switch Lite to Japan except the ones that had been pre-ordered.
Nintendo posted a tweet in Japanese that it would update customers on next week’s shipping schedule.

“[Notice] Nintendo Switch itself (including “Amazing Animal Crossing”) and Nintendo Switch Lite are not shipped this week except for reservations. We will inform you of the shipping schedule next week,” the tweet read in English.
Nintendo had announced production delays in China on 6th February 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although Nintendo had begun moving components of its manufacturing to Vietnam in 2019, it still relies on China for supplies.
Nintendo Switch sales have skyrocketed
Nintendo issued a statement saying: “Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the U.S., but more systems are on the way. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Sales of the Switch had increased by 150% in many markets at the start of the lockdown in March 2020. The game has sold over 52 million consoles in just under three years. Industry estimates say it has already surpassed sales of the Xbox One. This is despite launching 4 years after the Xbox One.
China, which supplies many switch parts, is reopening manufacturing so the shipments may soon pick up.
