North Korea has sentenced a man to death for smuggling “Squid Game” into the country in a flash drive.
Radio Free Asia (RFA), an independent broadcasting house resident in the US have reported that a man was arrested and now faces death by firing squad after some high schoolers were caught watching the South Korean Netflix series in school.
One high schooler who was caught in possession of the dystopian series in a USB flash drive has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Five others also got six years in prison with hard labour each.
“A student who bought a drive received a life sentence, while six others who watched the show have been sentenced to five years hard labor, and teachers and school administrators have been fired and face banishment to work in remote mines,” RFA reported.

“This all started last week when a high school student secretly bought a USB flash drive containing the South Korean drama Squid Game and watched it with one of his best friends in class,” a law enforcement source in North Hamgyong province told the RFA. “The friend told several other students, who became interested, and they shared the flash drive with them.”
In 2020, North Korea passed the “Elimination of Reactionary Thought and Culture” law which prohibits the entry and consumption of foreign media in the dictatorship country. The law particularly targets media from South Korea and the US.
According to reports, a man was executed in April this year for distributing CDs from South Korea.
Netflix is yet to comment on the disturbing news.
