Reports from Nikkei says Oppo might be developing its own processors for its high-end flagship smartphones. The company intends to release custom processors for its smartphones in early 2023 or late 2024.
The company may just follow Google and ditch Qualcomm chips which earlier powered its flagship devices. Google Pixel 6 runs on a custom made in-house processor called the “Tensor”.
Oppo on the other hand will be using Taiwan’s TSMC’s advanced 3nm technology on its own chips. The Chinese company will be joining the likes of Huawei, Samsung, Apple and Google in producing their own smartphone chips.
Elsewhere a recent job opening for System-on-a-chip (SOC) architect at Microsoft’s Surface points to a custom made processor for its devices. Just like Apple’s new M1 Pro and Max chips, Microsoft might be interested in making its own processors.
The Job listing has a description of “the features and capabilities of SoC used on Surface devices.” This might just mean the Redmond based company is looking to design its own chips.

Apple’s custom made chips have so many benefits than Intel’s. Interestingly, Apple can now make its Macbooks and iMacs run cooler and quieter due to its chip design.
The Windows 11 owners can certainly borrow the same ideology from Apple in designing their own chips. That way, it can ditch the Intel and AMD chips in its devices and run more efficiently.
Although a job listing doesn’t confirm that Microsoft is building its own Chips, it would be good for innovation if it actually does. We only speculate that an SoC silicon architect job listing is just the right step in that direction.
Oppo’s move to develop in house custom processors would heavily affect Qualcomm’s share of Android processors development. This benefits Oppo, as it will be able to design these processors with its hardware in mind as well as reduce supply constraints.
